YOUNG PEOPLE WHO CARE QUESTIONNAIRE

In September 2007, we sent out this questionnaire to 85 young people who were on the Young Carers Project list…

We received 34 responses for which we were very grateful !!

Not everything is on here – for instance, if we thought it may identify someone, we’ve not put it here, but will have taken it into account…

We’ve shared the main outcomes, and it has helped us all think about what we might try to arrange as extra support, as well as keeping the current group going..

                                                           Thank You

1.       Who do you help look after in your family (please circle)

10 people (29%) said they cared for more than one person

So     for 16 people this was, or included, a brother or sister

for 15 people this was, or included, a parent

and   for  4 people this was, or included, a grandparent

4 people didn’t answer

2.       Please circle the things you do to help?

lifting          4

bathing      4

changing   1

dressing   5

medicine   9

mobility     3

looking out for a brother or sister        22

cooking        11

cleaning       17

shopping       17

laundry            6

staying with or ‘keeping an eye on’ someone 23

helping with bills /forms   1

On average, people marked over 4 things as the ways in which they helped

all but one person marked more than one thing..

one person marked 11..

The most common task by far was keeping an eye on / looking out for some-one, followed by domestic chores… some of these may be a question of the amount done compared to others, but there are clearly tasks that other children do not face.

Thank you very much for your time and for sharing your information

there was some difficulty for us in getting the language right – and we may have slightly confused one or two answers, but there were certainly some ideas there for us about what could be done about getting more information, more support, and more opportunities for young carers in Walsall.

So thanks again to all who responded, and we hope the vouchers have been put to good use!
